This print of a drawing by Marcellus Laroon (1653-1702) comes from Laroon’s series of seventy-two comic images “The Cries of London in Six Parts.” This particular print was published in 1760.
Now, this “Cries of London” is not to be confused with the famous late Eighteenth –Century series of 12 paintings by F. Wheatley that goes by the same name. This larger group by Laroon predates the more prolific Wheatley series by a good sixty years.
Here we see, “Who rewards the Posture Master?” wherein a man and a monkey both stand on one leg with their tongues out for balance—as one does.
This engraving has been hand-colored with watercolor.

The monkey is cheating. He's using his tail as a second leg. Cheating one way monkey.

Evidently the man is aping the ape.
