Object of the Day: A Spooky Portrait

I’m not really sure what compelled me to buy this portrait. I always liked the frame, but, the painting itself makes me uneasy. It languished in an antique shop that I often frequented for many years. I suppose, I began to feel sorry for it because it couldn’t find a home. Yet, it does creep me out. He’s been in many different rooms in the house. I finally placed it in a corner where there’s enough warmth to combat his inherent spookiness.

The work is unsigned and undated. I’m guessing it was painted in the late 1920’s to mid 1930’s. The portrait shows a sour, bald man in an open trench coat which reveals that he’s wearing nothing underneath it. It’s just a weird painting—perfect for Halloween. And, there you have it. Boo!
